The Riverside Confession Letter - Interpretation

SHE WAS THEN VERY WILLING TO TALK TO ME. I TOLD HER THAT MY CAR WAS DOWN THE STREET AND THAT I WOULD GIVE HER A LIFT HOME.
Possibly the killer had tried (to continue) talking with her in the library, but apparently Cheri Jo Bates had not been too interested in a conversation. Another possibility is that the killer refers to previous failed attempts to have a conversation with her.

The killer must have foreseen that he could not approach Cheri Jo Bates by other means than through creating the “special” circumstance of her disabled car, making a conversation for her with him unavoidable. That he disabled her car shows on one hand his great lack of self-confidence (re-)approaching an attractive female of his peer group in a more daring way. At the same time and most probably as a direct result of his uncertainty, it shows his desire to create circumstances that put him into full control of the situation. Possibly he is what people would call a “control freak”.
WHEN WE WERE AWAY FROM THE LIBRARY WALKING, I SAID IT WAS ABOUT TIME. SHE ASKED ME, "ABOUT TIME FOR WHAT?" I SAID IT WAS ABOUT TIME FOR HER TO DIE.
Based on ear witness account and evidence from the crime scene, the killer apparently succeeded in spending time with Cheri Jo Bates for about 60-90 minutes after she left the library.
What is it that the killer does not say here? What happened in the meantime? Did they have a long conversation? Cheri Jo Bates and the killer must have been somewhere outside of the library – most probably sitting. Or were they just sitting together in Cheri Jo Bates’ car talking, after their futile attempts getting it started? In any case, they must have been in or in very close proximity to the library, based on the killer’s description “WHEN WE WERE AWAY FROM THE LIBRARY WALKING” and findings of the police at the crime scene.
We would see a temporary abduction involving some sexual harassment before the actual murder as a possible scenario. The killer may have threatened Cheri Jo Bates with his knife or another weapon at a rather early stage of the crime, in order to direct her to a place close to the library and away from the car. Arriving there, he told her what he wanted to tell her and possibly touched her sexually.
Another and same likely scenario would be that the killer created the special circumstance by disabling Cheri Jo Bates’ car in order to just have a conversation with her that he could not have had otherwise. Possibly he was obsessed with her and madly in love. He thought that if he would have a chance to explain himself to her and his feelings, she would consider having a relationship with him. So it might be that the killer had no initial intent to kill and that he just wanted to have a conversation with Cheri Jo Bates. However, the conversation did not end with the outcome that the killer had expected or hoped for.
In any case, the killer obviously felt rejected, disappointed and extremely upset.
I GRABBED HER AROUND THE NECK WITH MY HAND OVER HER MOUTH AND MY OTHER HAND WITH A SMALL KNIFE AT HER THROAT. SHE WENT VERY WILLINGLY.
This sounds contradictory at a first glance. Possibly, Cheri Jo Bates did not fight immediately when he grabbed her from behind. Either she was in shock or she thought if she would comply he finally would let her go.
HER BREAST FELT WARM AND VERY FIRM UNDER MY HANDS
That the killer touched Cheri Jo Bates’ breast intentionally or unintentionally with both of his hands and reports it in his “Confession Letter” has a sexual component. However, his intentions are not predominantly sexual. Most probably it was for him a way to dominate and humiliate his victim while he was controlling her with a weapon. In any case, his remark suggests that most likely the killer was heterosexual.
BUT ONLY ONE THING WAS ON MY MIND. MAKING HER PAY FOR ALL THE BRUSH OFFS THAT SHE HAD GIVEN ME DURING THE YEARS PRIOR.
The killer’s obvious hatred, apparently as a result of brush offs he experienced in the past, either from Cheri Jo Bates or from other women that he compared Cheri Jo Bates with, was obviously far greater than the killer’s sexual desire. He wanted to take revenge, wanted to get even, wanted to destroy what he could not have.
