SHE DIED HARD. SHE SQUIRMED AND SHOOK AS I CHOCKED HER, AND HER LIPS TWICHED. SHE LET OUT A SCREAM ONCE AND I KICKED HER IN THE HEAD TO SHUT HER UP. I PLUNGED THE KNIFE INTO HER AND IT BROKE. I THEN FINISHED THE JOB BY CUTTING HER THROAT.
The killer’s frustration turned into wild aggression, he stabbed his victim numerous times. |

For obvious reasons, it cannot be easy to kill an adult person with a small knife, particularly when considering that Cheri Jo Bates was a cheerleader and therefore presumably in excellent physical condition. When she realized that he intended to killer her she must have fought hard for her life.
Therefore, she was presumably in excellent physical condition. When she realized that he intended to killer her she must have fought hard for her life.
While the killer’s rage was certainly one of the reasons, other reasons for Cheri Jo Bates’ numerous stab wounds are likely to be the smallness of the killer’s knife that couldn’t immediately inflict a deadly wound as well as Cheri Jo Bates defending herself to the best of her ability.
The killer was stronger and most probably significantly heavier than her, and had possibly inflicted already wounds on her with his initial attack. With the ongoing fight and suffering from additional wounds, Cheri Jo Bates must have gotten weaker and weaker. When she was too weak to resist, the killer cut throat to an extent that he nearly cut off her head.
Apart from his rage, the killer possibly wanted to make certain with the “over-kill” that she was dead, that she could not testify, because probably she knew him and could have identified him.
I AM NOT SICK. I AM INSANE. BUT THAT WILL NOT STOP THE GAME.
The remark “I AM NOT SICK” could possibly suggest that the killer had been diagnosed with a (mental) condition or illness before, but that this condition or illness has been comparably harmless and nothing that could serve as an excuse for his crime.
Probably the killer tried to rationalize his crime during the weeks after and concluded that it was an insane deed. However, he clearly expresses that his insanity would not stop “THE GAME” that either had started already or was going to start sometime in the future.
THIS LETTER SHOULD BE PUBLISHED FOR ALL TO READ IT. IT JUST MIGHT SAVE THAT GIRL IN THE ALLEY. BUT THAT'S UP TO YOU. IT WILL BE ON YOUR CONSCIENCE. NOT MINE.
The killer wanted his message to be published for everybody to acknowledge. Very obviously, he had a strong desire for being heard and feared.
With the way he phrases his threat, the killer tries to shift the responsibility for his future crimes to others (I warned you; you did not listen; ;it is your fault, not mine; I am insane).
At the same time, he feels powerful, realizing that his message will frighten people.
YES, I DID MAKE THAT CALL TO YOU ALSO. IT WAS JUST A WARNING.
It is not fully clear what the killer meant with “YES, I DID MAKE THAT CALL TO YOU ALSO.” Did he make a threatening phone call before or after the crime?
BEWARE...I AM STALKING YOUR GIRLS NOW.
The killer confirms stalking as his intended way of indentifying his victims, fully consistent with what he said before about the “BEAUTIFUL BLOND” and the “SHAPELY BROWNETT”.
