The Zodiac Killer's 'Three Part Cipher' has been mailed from San Francisco, California, in three parts to different newspapers on July 31, 1969. The first part of the cipher has been mailed to Vallejo Times-Herald; the second part of the cipher to San Francisco Chronicle; and the third cipher part to The San Francisco Examiner.
In almost identical cover letters, the Zodiac Killer confessed to the previous shootings at Lake Herman Road and Blue Rock Springs and threatened to kill more people if the ciphers would not be published on the front pages of the respective newspapers. Furthermore, the Zodiac Killer stated that the cipher would contain his identity. The newspapers published the three parts of the Zodiac Killer's cryptogram subsequently.
While authorities could not immediately crack the Zodiac Killer's cipher, a teacher couple of Salinas, California, Donald and Bettye Harden, have been able to solve the cryptogram on August 8, 1969. The cracked cipher provided chilling insights into the Zodiac Killer's mind. The cipher solution did not contain the name of the Zodiac Killer. However, the decoded cryptogram's last eighteen characters showed what seemed to be garbled text.
